Learn German - Online German Courses for Faculty

This grant is provided to faculty members in all academic fields except German Language and Literature and German Translation and Interpretation to attend online language courses offered by the Goethe-Institut in North America throughout the year:

Extensive descriptions of the Goethe-Institut and its teaching philosophy are available at the Goethe-Institut website.

The following courses or course combinations may be selected:

Please note:

  • In the case of the 5-week and 8-week courses, two consecutive courses at progressing levels must be chosen. However, an 8-week B-level course may also follow a 5-week A-level course to ensure progression.
  • Other courses offered by the Goethe-Institut are currently NOT supported by DAAD.

Who can apply?

  • Scholars who hold a PhD (or equivalent) and have been working in research or teaching full-time at a university or research institution in the United States or Canada for at least two years after receipt of the doctorate are eligible.
  • Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada.
  • Preference will be given to mid-career applicants in the social sciences, the natural sciences, engineering and professional schools. Faculty members who teach in the fields of German Language and Literature or German Translation and Interpretation are not eligible.
  • Applicants must have a basic knowledge of German and be able to demonstrate a need for acquiring a better proficiency in the German language for their future studies or research.
  • Applicants should not have previously studied in a German-speaking country for more than two months and/or received a grant to attend a German language course from DAAD or any other organization within the last three years.

  • The award consists of the direct disbursement by DAAD to the Goethe-Institut of the course costs.

  • Please submit application materials via email to: gaedeke@daad.de.  Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.
  • The results are expected to be announced by mid-April.

Please note: Incomplete applications cannot be processed. No reason for a decision will be given.

A complete application consists of the items listed below and the application should be in this order:

  1. DAAD application form (includes a self-test form for language evaluation). Please answer all questions on the form, even if you refer to additional material. The form can be downloaded in the box on the right.
  2. Curriculum vitae, not exceeding five pages.
  3. A detailed statement explaining why the applicant wants to attend an online language course.
  4. A list of publications and a list of courses taught during the previous academic year.
