100 Years of DAAD Alumni: Yue (Jessie) Chen

Which DAAD program did you receive support through?
I received a DAAD Research Grant to conduct research at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) as part of my Doctoral studies at the University of British Columbia.
What comes to mind when you think of your DAAD experience in Germany?
I took the opportunity to explore various buildings and construction projects across different cities in Germany. Witnessing the architectural diversity and craftsmanship firsthand was truly fascinating. I was especially inspired by the country’s rich history of using wood as a primary building material, which showcased both its aesthetic appeal and structural versatility. The seamless integration of traditional techniques with modern innovations deepened my appreciation for wood as a sustainable and timeless construction resource.
I was also deeply impressed by the researchers’ rigorous and precise approach to their work, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to accuracy and excellence. The professors were exceptionally knowledgeable, offering valuable insights and expertise in their respective fields. The researchers and students in my research group maintained a close and collaborative working relationship with the professor. This strong connection fostered an environment of continuous learning and intellectual exchange. The frequent and open daily communication allowed for quick problem-solving, constructive feedback, and the consistent sharing of ideas, ultimately making our research work highly efficient and productive. This dynamic interaction not only accelerated progress but also enhanced our overall understanding and engagement with the subject matter.
The university provided extensive support to both students and researchers, ensuring they had access to the necessary resources, guidance, and facilities to thrive in their academic pursuits.
For example, the student cafeterias provided a diverse selection of dishes, featuring cuisines from various countries. This wide range of options allowed students to explore different flavours and enjoy a multicultural food experience. The quality and variety of the meals made lunchtime a delightful and enjoyable part of the day. Whether trying something new or sticking to familiar favourites, having lunch at the cafeteria offered both convenience and a pleasant break from academic activities. Additionally, the people I encountered were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made my experience even more enjoyable.
The German rail transportation system was also remarkably efficient and convenient, allowing me to travel smoothly and efficiently between different locations. This well-organized and reliable network made exploring the country effortless and enjoyable.
