The German-Canadian Society (DKG), a non-profit organization headquartered in Cologne dedicated to promoting economic, cultural and human relations between Germany and Canada, celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2021.

From small beginnings in 1951 with the invitation of Canadian soldiers stationed in Hanover to Christmas parties of German families the DKG developed its activities to become a renowned part of the Canadian – German dialogue.

Two exchange programs represent an important part of the activities: The Work & Travel Program for German students and school graduates established in 1965 has been listed under the Canadian-German Agreement of Cultural Co-operation. Due to substantial support by the Canadian Embassy in Berlin and many long-standing partners in Canada more than 3,200 participants successfully took part in this program and mention it as a milestone in their biography.

The second program offers a study-related internship in Canada to highly qualified German students with special focus on engineering or natural sciences.

Furthermore, the DKG organizes events such as concerts, readings, exhibitions, pub quizzes and get-togethers on a regional and national level all over Germany. The annual Canadian weekend is celebrated in alternating German cities – this year in Hanover to commemorate the 70th anniversary.

The DKG has recently set up a task force to explore means to expand its activities to Canada. As a first step a permanent representation in Toronto will be established with other cities to follow. We welcome every kind of support to foster the Canadian-German relations on the other side of the ocean.
